Indenture of Henry William Paine 1841

This Indenture, made the fourth day of August in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty one Between Henry William Paine (son of William Paine deceased and Susanna his wife now Susanna Pursell wife of Thomas Pursell Butcher a poor boy belonging to the parish of Stony Stratford in the County of Buckingham of the first part, The Reverend John Lloyd Crawley of Nether Heyford in the county of Northampton Clerk (one of the Trustees acting in the execution of certain trusts contained in the last will and testament of Edmund Arnold, Esquire, deceased) of the second part and John Deverell of No 143 Oxford Street in the Parish of All Souls Saint Marylebone in the County of Middlesex Draper of the third part, Witnesseth, that the said Henry William Paine of his own free and voluntary consent and good liking, and by and with the privity and approbation of the said John Lloyd Crawley (testified by their respectively executing these presents) doth put, place, and bind himself Apprentice to the said John Deverell to be taught and instructed in the Art, Trade, or Mysteries of a Darper which the said John Deverell now useth and after the manner of an Apprentice with the said John Deverell to dwell and serve from the day of the date of these presents for, and during and unto the full end and term of five years. During all which term the said Apprentice, his Master faithfully shall serve, his secrets keep, hid lawful commands gladly do, the goods of his said Master he shall not purloin, nor waste, nor buy, nor sell, without his Master’s leave, nor from the service of his Master day or night unlawfully shall absent himself, but in all things as an honest and faithful Apprentice, shall and will demean and behave himself, towards his Master and all his Family during the said term. And the said John Deverell in consideration of such service and the sum of Twenty Pounds of lawful money of the united kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland (being part of the Charity money arising from an estate at Furthoe in the said County of Northampton, given and directed to be applied in and by the said will of the said Edmund Arnold, deceased, for putting out poor children Apprentice) to him the said John Deverell by the said John Lloyd Crawley paid and to be paid as follows, that is to say, the Sum of ten pounds, part of the said premium of twenty pounds on the execution of the presents, the receipt whereof id hereby acknowledged and the sum of ten pounds, residue of the said premium at or upon the expiration of half the said apprenticeship term doth hereby for himself, his heir’s executors, and administrators, covenant, promise, and agree to and with the said John Lloyd Crawley his executors and administrators in manner following (that is to say), that he the said John Deverell his said Apprentice in the art, trade or mysteries of a Draper which the said John Deverell now useth, and after the best way and manner that he can, shall, and will teach and instruct, or cause to be taught and instructed; and that he, the said John Deverell shall and will find and provide for his said Apprentice, wholesome and sufficient meat, drink, washing, lodging, wearing apparel of all sorts, and all other necessaries during the said term; and also that he, the said John Deverell shall and will cause his said Apprentice to repair to his Parish Church every Lord’s day, and other solemn days appointed for Divine Service, and further, that he the said John Deverell his executors or administrators shall not, nor will during that said term, assign or turn over the said Apprentice to any person or persons whomsoever, without the consent, in writing, of the said John Lloyd Crawley or some, or one, of the Trustees of the said Charity first had and obtained for that purpose; and for the true performance of all and every the said covenants and agreements, each of the said parties hereto bindeth himself unto the other or others of them. In Witness whereof, the said parties to these presents have hereto set their hands and seals the day and year first above written.

 Received on the day of the date of the above written Indenture, of and from the above named John Lloyd Crawley the sum of ten pounds being consideration money mentioned, to be by him now paid to me, I say, received the sum of £10 0. 0.


William Parsons - evil treated

County of Bucks to wit Whereas complaint hath been made before us, The Revd John Athawes Clerk and The Revd Harry Alexander Small Clerk two of her Majesty’s Justices of the Peace in and for the said County by William Parsons Apprentice to Samuel Woodland late of the Parish of Wolverton in the said County Cordwainer but now or late of Bradwell in the said County that he the said Samuel Woodland hath misused and evil treated him the said Apprentice and particularly by neglecting to provide him with food and lodging and having gone away and left the said Apprentice without providing him with the Means of learning his Trade

And whereas it hath been duly proved before us as well upon the Oath of William Morris Constable of the Parish of Bradwell aforesaid as otherwise that he the said William Morris did duly summon the said Samuel Woodland to appear before us at a reasonable time in the said Summons mentioned and specified but notwithstanding the same he the said Samuel Woodland hath not appeared before us according to such Summons We therefore having duly examined into the matter of the said Complaint and the truth thereof having been fully proved before us upon Oath do discharge him the said William Parsons of and from his Apprenticeship to the said Samuel Woodland anything in the Indenture of Apprenticeship made betwixted them or otherwise howsoever to the contrary notwithstanding.
