CHURCH CHOIR SUPPER.—The choir and bell ringers (as in previous years), were kindly entertained to a capital supper, at the Rectory, on Saturday evening, by the Rev. McDouall, rector of Cosgrove Church. The repast, which consisted of a number of courses, was thoroughly enjoyed, and, on the removal of the cloth, the usual loyal toasts were duly honoured, after which the rector wished those present a happy new year, and in doing so said that they were come nearly to an end of the jubilee year, and, on the whole, it had been very prosperous. There had been a lot of grand festivities in honour of the Jubilee, and everything had passed off very satisfactorily. He hoped the year 1888 would be still more prosperous (applause). The rector here left, and the evening's harmony was well sustained by Messrs. Brawn, Benson, Jones, T. Green, Wheatley, Green, and Baldwin. Dancing was also indulged in at intervals, which was much enjoyed. Towards twelve o'clock Mr. Brawn proposed that three cheers be given to the rector for his very great kindness. This was most heartily done, and three cheers for the servants were given. After the cheering had subsided, God save the Queen was sung, and a very pleasant evening was brought to an end. The ringing of the bells announced that the old year had passed sway.

BELLRINGERS’ OUTING

Thirty-four bellringers, with their wives and friends, from Cosgrove, Stony Stratford, and neighbourhood, visited the Irthlingborough district on Saturday for their annual outing. The first call was Irchester, and then to Higham Ferrers, Raunds, Irthlingborough, and Finedon. Tea was taken at Raunds. The visitors were full of praise for the lovely old churches visited. During their stay they rang various methods at the churches.

Jim was a keen apiarist for over twenty-five years, and was a member of the Wolverton Beekeepers Association. As a church bellringer he rang Quarter Peals with teams of bellringing beekeepers for the Royal Show at Stoneleigh.
He kept twenty hives in the Rectory grounds, and these once provided good food for several broods of nightingales, bred in the nearby double hedge. The young nightingales sat on the hives and picked off the bees as they flew in.

Chris Stokes’ 1000th Peal
Congratulations to Cosgrove's Tower Captain.

On September 22nd 2012, at Long Crendon, Chris Stokes achieved the remarkable feat of ringing his 1000th peal of church bells. A peal is approximately 5000 changes of a set of bells which takes about three hours, non-stop, with a team of ringers. He has travelled a fair few miles up and down the country and even across the world, to achieve this!

Chris started ringing at the age of nine, in 1957 and rang his first peal at Roade on September 22nd, 1962, so this is a Golden Jubilee too. Well respected bell ringers belong to the "Ancient Society of College Youths" and Chris is an elected member of this group.

What an achievement.!

Chris’s Tower Song
KT 22nd September 2012

Ring out ye bells
With joyous zeal
For Chris has reached
His 1000th peal.

This year’s been packed
With peals galore
To make him reach
This awesome score.

From callow youth
Of just 9 years
When first he climbed
The belfry stairs

To Tower Captain
In his prime
The Cosgrove bells
For him will chime

Oh frabjous day
I have a hunch
That all concerned
Are due for lunch

Bon appétit
And dine away
On this his most
Auspicious day.
