First mentioned in the accounts in 1734 2 duzen of basses 5s 3d.

Baises / bases / basses were used as kneelers, to keep the knees of priest and parishioner clean when kneeling to pray. They were possibly made from (green) baize, quite heavy forms of which were in use in piano-making at the time. Dozens were bought at one time. In some places four at once were allocated to the pulpit, parishioners probably got only one, and they seem to have worn out fairly quickly according to the repeated purchases of them in the accounts.
