Property Levies 1771 -1772

The Cosgrove Church levy is a contribution or due as a tax, especially for the support of the church's disbursments

In this section we have rationalised spelling to enable you to read names and places easily. We have done this only where spelling was grossly deficient in the original longhand, and where we are completely certain of the modern equivalent. For instance, where “Perry” is given as a place name, we have recorded it as “Potterspury”. The surname “Bryer” is recorded with its most common spelling, although in the original it may sometimes appear as “Briar”, “Briair” and so on.

A Levey Granted to the Churchwardens of ye parish of Cosgrove 1771 after ye Rate of one Shilling in ye pound Rent for the Repairs of the Church and other disbursments for ye year 1771 and part of 1772

There was a potash kiln in Old Stratford in 1713 operated by Stephen Holwell; it burnt down in about 1745 and a house was built on the site. Another kiln appears to have been newly built on the Cosgrove side of Watling Street in 1758, when it was occupied by James Hall. In 1759-61 it was in the hands of William Hobbs and from 1762 until at least 1772 the occupiers was John Pinfold. VCH Riden
